About Bangladesh Nationalist Party

Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP was founded on September 1, 1978 on the basis of Bangladeshi Nationalism, an ideology that recognizes the right of Bangladeshis from all walks of life, irrespective of their ethnicity, gender or race.

"Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, the most celebrated war hero of 1971 liberation war, is the founder of the party."

The name of this party will be 'Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Dal'. In English, this organization will be called 'Bangladesh Nationalist Party' (BNP) and in short this party will be called 'Nationalist Party' and 'BNP'. The national office and central headquarters of this party is located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. and the organization of the headquarters or central office of the party shall be under the responsibility of the chairman and the titles, responsibilities and powers of the various officers of the office shall be determined by the chairman himself.

Party Flag

The upper half of the team's flag will be red and the lower half will be green. In the center of the flag there will be a black industrial circle. From the point of this circle at the junction of red and green, a row of golden rice grains will extend upwards. Above the rice grain will be a white star. Green is the symbol of the country; Red is the symbol of freedom war and sacrifice, industrial cycle is the symbol of growth and progress, grain of rice is the symbol of determination to achieve self-sufficiency in food and the white star is the symbol of our national hopes and aspirations.

BNP's Mission

BNP's mission was economic development, democratization, national unity based on Bangladeshi nationalism and the emergence of self-reliance among the people. Based on these, President Ziaur Rahman announced 19-point program.

1991

Begum Khaleda Zia became the first elected female Prime Minister of Bangladesh

1996

Begum Khaleda Zia won second term, but decided to run for reelection under caretaker govt

BNP won 116 seats, highest by any opposition party in Bangladesh, in fresh election

2001

Begum Khaleda Zia got elected as the Prime Minister again

2008

BNP lost an engineered election, Begum Khaleda Zia became Leader of the Opposition

2009

Tarique Rahman became Senior Vice - Chairman of BNP

2014

BNP boycotted national election along with other democratic parties due to autocratic election administration

2018

Tarique Rahman became Acting Chairman and BNP rejected farcical result of rigged election marred with unprecedented irregularities

2023

BNP announces 'one-point' movement to remove Awami League from power and hold upcoming national election under neutral government

Shaheed Ziaur Rahman

Founder & Former President

Lieutenant General Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam (1936-1981) was the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was the declarer of independence and a valiant freedom fighter. He was also Chief of Army Staff and later became the elected President of Bangladesh. He opened up multi-party democracy in Bangladesh and defined Bangladeshi Nationalism.

Begum Khaleda Zia

Chairperson & Former Prime minister

Begum Khaleda Zia (Born: 15 August 1946) is the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP who served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times since 1991. She is the first woman to be elected as the prime minister of Bangladesh, and second in the Muslim world.

Acting Chairman

Tarique Rahman (Born: 20 November 1967) is the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP. He previously served as the Senior Vice-Chairman and Senior Joint Secretary of the party.
